Something that boggles my mind concerning the Hurricanes brass

After hearing what TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger said on SportsCenter which was about how if the Carolina Hurricanes continued to struggle with two huge games coming up on Friday and Sunday both at home vs the Sabres and the Maple Leafs, there was one topic that he mentioned that boggled my mind. He said that they were looking for a forward and GM Jim Rutherford would do anything such as trading injured defenceman Joni Pitkanen or recently signed Tomas Kaberle but what I do not get is if this was an issue they needed to address, why did they not try and sign a free agent who had great upside such as Simon Gagne, Jaromir Jagr, or even Max Talbot but he should of kept Erik Cole. I mean he had great size for a forward at 6ft 2, had scored 26 goals and 52 points and yet he now is in a Habs uniform. Whether Carolina has the economic resources or not to making the team, this should of been addressed during the offseason because which forward will they find is capable of developping instant chemistry with Captain Eric Staal as he is going through a slow start to the year. Should the woes continue not only will some players be in different uniforms, but do not be surprised if a new coach will be coaching for the rest of the year.
